Quick answer: Go to Settings > My Fire TV > About > Storage to see how much space is left. Then free some up: uninstall apps you don’t use, clear the cache on your biggest apps, and delete leftover install files in the Downloader app. Most Fire Sticks need at least 1 to 2 GB free to run smoothly.
Fire TV Sticks don’t have much storage. Most models have 8 GB, and the Fire TV Stick 4K Max has 16 GB. A good chunk of that goes to the system. As apps update and caches grow, the stick fills up, and a full stick gets slow: menus lag, apps crash, and streams stutter. Here’s how to get the space back.
Signs your Fire Stick is low on storage
- A “low storage” or “storage almost full” warning
- Menus that lag or freeze
- Apps closing on their own or failing to update
- Buffering that started recently, even though your internet tests fine
Step 1: Check how much space you have
Go to Settings > My Fire TV > About > Storage. Note the available space. If it’s under about 1 GB, you’ll almost certainly feel it in performance. Aim to get back to 1.5 GB or more.
Step 2: Uninstall apps you don’t use
- Go to Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications.
- Select any app you haven’t opened in a month, such as games, trial apps, or apps that came with the stick.
- Choose Uninstall.
Games are usually the biggest offenders. You can always reinstall an app later from the Appstore.
Step 3: Clear the cache, not the data
In the same menu, select each of your most-used apps and choose Clear Cache. The cache is temporary files, and clearing it is safe.
Don’t choose Clear Data unless you mean to. Clear Data resets the app completely, so you’d have to sign in again. For IPTV Smarters Pro, that means re-entering your username, password, and server URL.
The apps with the largest caches are usually streaming apps: IPTV Smarters Pro, YouTube, Netflix, and Prime Video. Clearing them once a month keeps things fast.
Step 4: Delete leftover install files in Downloader
If you installed IPTV Smarters Pro or another app with Downloader, the install file (an APK) may still be sitting on the stick, using space. Open Downloader, go to its Files section, and delete any .apk files you’ve already installed. Check Downloader’s settings for an option to delete install files automatically after installing, so this doesn’t happen again.
Step 5: Turn off what you don’t need
- Automatic app updates keep apps current, which is good, but every update can grow an app. If storage is very tight, you can turn them off under Settings > Applications > Appstore > Automatic Updates and update the apps you use by hand.
- Featured content and auto-play under Settings > Preferences > Featured Content can be turned off. It won’t free storage, but it lightens the home screen and makes the stick feel faster.
Step 6: Restart
Hold Select + Play/Pause on the remote for about five seconds until the stick restarts. A restart clears memory, which is different from storage but just as important for speed. Once a week is a good habit.
Step 7 (last resort): Factory reset
If the stick is still slow after all of the above, a factory reset gives you a fresh start. Go to Settings > My Fire TV > Reset to Factory Defaults. This erases everything, so you’ll need your Amazon password, your Wi-Fi password, and your LoftyTV login to set it up again. Follow How to Install LoftyTV on a Fire TV Stick afterward.
When it’s time for a new stick
Older and entry-level sticks with 8 GB of storage and less memory struggle with today’s apps, no matter how often you clean them. If yours is several years old and still slow after a reset, a newer model with more storage and memory is a big upgrade. One warning: Amazon’s newest budget models, the Fire TV Stick 4K Select and the 2026 Fire TV Stick HD, run a new operating system that can’t install IPTV apps. Frequently asked questions
How much free storage does a Fire Stick need?
Try to keep at least 1 to 2 GB free. Below about 1 GB, most sticks slow down noticeably.
Will clearing the cache log me out of IPTV Smarters Pro?
No. Clear Cache keeps your login. Clear Data is the option that erases it.
Can I add more storage to a Fire Stick?
Fire Sticks don’t have a memory card slot. Some Fire TV devices accept USB storage through an adapter, but support for running apps from it is limited. Freeing up space, or upgrading the stick, is the more reliable fix.
Does low storage cause buffering?
It can. A stick that’s out of space and memory struggles to keep up with video. If storage is fine, look at your network next. See How to Stop IPTV Buffering on Your Fire TV Stick.
