Quick answer: Xtream Codes is the login type most IPTV apps use (username, password, server URL). An M3U is a playlist link that does the same job in one long web address. The EPG is the TV guide. VOD is the movie and series library. Catch-up lets you watch shows that already aired on supported channels.
IPTV comes with its own vocabulary, and most setup guides assume you already know it. This glossary explains the terms you’ll actually run into, grouped by when you’ll need them.
Terms you’ll see when you sign up
IPTV
Internet Protocol Television: live channels and on-demand video delivered over the internet instead of cable or satellite. For the full picture, see What Is IPTV?
Service vs. player app
This is the most important distinction to understand. The service (like LoftyTV) provides the channels and your login. The player app (like IPTV Smarters Pro) is the software you watch them in. The player app has no channels until you sign in with a service’s login. When you have a problem, it helps to know which one is acting up.
Connection (or simultaneous connection)
One stream playing at one time. A 1-device plan lets one screen play at a time, no matter how many devices have the app installed. See Watching LoftyTV on More Than One TV.
Free trial
A short test login. LoftyTV’s lasts 24 hours and needs no payment details.

Xtream Codes API
The most common way to sign in to an IPTV service. You enter three things:
- Username
- Password
- Server URL, a web address like
http://example.com:8080
In IPTV Smarters Pro, choose Login with Xtream Codes API. This is the method we recommend, because it loads live TV, movies, series, and the TV guide automatically.
Server URL and port
The server URL is the address of the service’s server. The number after the colon (for example, :8080) is the port. Type both exactly as shown in your welcome email, including http://. A missing port is one of the most common reasons a login fails. See IPTV Smarters Pro Login Not Working?
M3U / M3U8 playlist
A playlist file, usually given as a long link, that lists every channel and where to stream it. Some apps and devices (such as VLC or certain TV apps) only accept an M3U link. It works, but it usually doesn’t bring in the movie and series library or the guide as neatly as Xtream Codes does. If your app asks for an M3U, ask us for yours.
MAG / Stalker portal
MAG boxes are dedicated IPTV set-top boxes. Instead of a username and password, they connect to a portal URL tied to the box’s MAC address (a unique hardware ID printed on the box). If you use one, send us the MAC address.
Enigma2
A Linux-based operating system used on some satellite and IPTV receivers. Setup is more technical than a Fire Stick. We can help if you already own one.

EPG (Electronic Program Guide)
The TV guide: the grid of what’s on now and next. Sometimes the guide data comes as a separate XMLTV link. If your guide is empty, look for an option in your app to install or refresh the EPG.
VOD (Video on Demand)
Movies and TV series you can start any time, like Netflix. In IPTV Smarters Pro, these are the Movies and Series sections.
Catch-up / time-shift
The ability to go back and watch a show that already aired on a live channel. Only channels that support it offer catch-up, and the window varies by channel.
FHD, HD, SD, and 4K
Picture quality. SD is standard definition, HD is 720p, FHD is 1080p, and 4K is 2160p. Many channels come in more than one version. If an FHD version buffers on a slower connection, the HD or SD version of the same channel usually plays smoothly.
Bitrate
How much data a stream uses per second. Higher bitrate generally means a better picture, and it needs a faster, steadier connection.
Buffering
When playback pauses to load more video. It’s usually a network or device issue, not the channel. See How to Stop IPTV Buffering on Your Fire TV Stick.
Anti-freeze
Server-side technology that keeps a stream playing through brief hiccups. It reduces freezing; it can’t fix a weak home connection.
Player selection
A setting in IPTV Smarters Pro that switches the video engine the app uses. Changing it often fixes a channel that stutters or has audio out of sync. See IPTV Audio Out of Sync?
Terms you’ll see during setup on a Fire TV or Android TV
APK
The install file for an Android app. Fire TV and Android TV devices can install an APK directly when an app isn’t in their app store.
Sideloading
Installing an app from an APK instead of the app store. Only sideload from sources you trust. For LoftyTV, we point you to the IPTV Smarters Pro download on its developer’s website.
Downloader
A free app in the Amazon Appstore and Google Play Store that downloads APK files on a TV device. It’s the standard way to install IPTV Smarters Pro on a Fire Stick. See How to Install LoftyTV on a Fire TV Stick.
Developer options
A hidden settings menu on Fire TV and Android TV that includes the switch allowing apps from outside the store. To reveal it on a Fire TV, go to Settings > My Fire TV > About, highlight your device name, and press the center button seven times.

Cache
Temporary files an app stores to load faster. Clearing the cache is a safe fix for many problems. Clear Data is different: it erases your login too.
VPN
A Virtual Private Network encrypts your traffic and routes it through another server. It can help if your internet provider slows streaming at busy hours, but it adds overhead, so it only helps on a strong connection.
Ethernet
A wired network cable. It’s the most reliable connection for streaming, and inexpensive adapters let you use one with a Fire Stick.
