For years, the answer was easy: buy any Fire TV Stick. That changed. Amazon has started moving its sticks to a new operating system, and the newest budget models can’t install IPTV players like IPTV Smarters Pro at all. Here’s how to avoid buying the wrong one.
What changed: Fire OS vs. Vega OS
Classic Fire TV devices run Fire OS, which is built on Android and lets you install apps from outside Amazon’s store using Downloader. Amazon’s newer Vega OS is a closed system that only runs apps from Amazon’s own store. Amazon has said that starting with the Fire TV Stick 4K Select, all future Fire TV Sticks will run Vega OS.
Models to avoid for IPTV
- Fire TV Stick 4K Select: runs Vega OS. If “Select” is in the name, skip it.
- Fire TV Stick HD (2026 model): runs Vega OS. The older Fire TV Stick HD still sold by some retailers runs Fire OS, which makes the name confusing. Check the listing carefully or buy a different model.
Models that still work
- Fire TV Stick 4K Max: our top pick. It’s fast, has plenty of memory for large channel guides, and runs Fire OS.
- Fire TV Stick 4K Plus: also runs Fire OS and works well.
- Fire TV Cube and TVs with Fire TV built in: currently run Fire OS.
How to check a Fire Stick you already own
Go to Settings > My Fire TV > About. If the software version says “Fire OS,” you can install IPTV Smarters Pro. If it doesn’t mention Fire OS, your device is on Vega OS. Amazon has said existing Fire OS devices won’t be switched over.
Future-proofing
If you’d rather not worry about what Amazon does next, a Google TV device like the onn 4K Pro from Walmart is a strong alternative. Google TV currently allows the apps IPTV viewers depend on. See our guide Fire Stick vs. onn 4K Pro for a side-by-side comparison.
